Decorating your college crib isn’t rocket science, after all. But it is a chance to show off your personal taste and style—spunky, sporty or traditional.
Use this 10-step formula to create a cozy personal space that feels like home-away-from-home. Keep it simple. Keep it organized. Keep it real. Discover the secrets that will make you a campus standout.
1. Survey your new room.
2. Know what’s off limits.
3. Contact your future roommate.
4. Plan and budget.
5. Research choices.
6. Learn how to do stuff for yourself.
7. Weed out the non-essentials.
8. Create smart storage spaces.
9. Sleep on it with a fluffy pillow, cheerful comforter and mattress topper.
10. Have fun.

P.S. Here’s a mom tip: let your kids take the old towels or linens to college and treat yourself to some new ones at home. I sent two sons to out-of-state college dorms, armed with fluffy new towels and 300-thread-count designer-label sheets (from one of the outlet stores). Never saw any of that stuff again. For all I know they may have used the sheets at a toga party or buffed their car with the towels. The next two sons got to take the “gently used” linens to college and I redecorated our home bathroom in a new color scheme. A foam egg crate or featherbed mattress topper can really improve the comfort of a dorm bed. These mattresses are often covered by a plastic wrap that can make an annoying crinkle-sound when you’re trying to sleep. A cheerful comforter and smooth-fitting sheets are must-haves. (Remember, dorm beds may be x-long and require sheets that are not the traditional twin-size). :
